Description
This enchanting vintage lidded basket from the renowned Shanghai Handicrafts is a masterclass in the intricate "Shanghai weave" technique. Expertly hand-woven from natural rattan and bamboo, the figural piece depicts a majestic bird—often interpreted as an owl or hawk—adorned with meticulously layered "feathers" that create a rich, three-dimensional texture. The warm, honey-toned body is accented by a vibrant, hand-painted red beak and charming inset eyes, reflecting the mid-century fascination with global folk art and Chinoiserie chic. Its soulful, artisanal presence makes it an arresting focal point for a curated bookshelf, a bohemian sunroom, or a sophisticated nursery. Measuring 5 inches wide, 5.5 inches deep, and 8.25 inches tall, this functional treasure features a removable head that reveals a hollow interior, perfect for concealing jewelry, small keepsakes, or desktop sundries. The piece is in excellent vintage condition, exhibiting a rich, authentic patina and minor character-filled wear consistent with its hand-crafted history and 1970s origin. These subtle marks of age only enhance the charm of this original export piece. Secure this evocative example of Chinese artisanal craftsmanship to add a touch of whimsical, global elegance to your private collection.
